In a global men's poll, many of you said that if you could have any superpower in the world, it would be this one: the ability to seduce any woman instantly.
A crowded bar, a hot summer night, the perfect girl leaning up against the bar. You lock eyes from across the room. Now what?
Your mother always told you that first impressions count -- and she was right. One study by Princeton psychologist Alex Todorov, PhD, found that people often decide whether someone is attractive and trustworthy in just a few seconds after laying eyes on them.
But don't panic: Even if that hottie doesn't like what she sees, it's not necessarily game over (as it would be with you, you shallow coot). While a man usually will eliminate a woman that he's not initially attracted to, women tend to work differently. "I would never have guess that I would fall in love with the man who became my husband," says Leonie, a stay-at-home mother in Aix-en-Provence, France. "I did not even think he was attractive until we had talked for a long time."
We've broken down the five stages of a first encounter, from the time your eyes meet to the moment you both decide to take it a step further, with tips to help you maximize your moves during every step of the process. But before we go there, let's get you putting your best foot forward with a quick chat about grooming and what you should wear.
Hey, Good Looking
You're probably very used to judging women by their appearance. Surprise! They're doing the exact same thing to you.
We're guessing you've read all the same studies we have. Women like tall men with big eyes, strong jaws, no baby fat in their faces, long eyelashes, expressive mouths -- the list goes on. But don't panic: There are plenty of guys out there who don't look like Orland Bloom but are still doing all right for themselves. You can't grow taller, but there's lots you can do to make yourself more attractive to the opposite sex.
It's important to remember that what we consider attractive is not just a matter of personal preference, but is in large part determined by fashion and the culture in which we were raised. In ancient Japan, young women dyed their teeth black to indicate that they'd come of age ( and perhaps to prevent tooth decay), and young men across Europe practiced swordplay, hoping to receive a scar or two to impress the chicks.
If you had to characterize the looks of the current times in one word, that word would be health. When you're in prime form, taking care of yourself, eating right, getting plenty of exercise (as well as plenty of rest), you not only project self-confidence, but you'll be what she wants: On an elemental level, women respond more positively to a healthy male.
The Kama Sutra (Aphorisms on Love) by Vatsyayana is the ancient Indian text that is perhaps best know as a catalog of ultr-athletic sexual positions. But the most notorious sex manual in the world also has a considerable amount to say about how you should look and take care of yourself before you go out and try to get together with someone.
"In fact, the Kama Sutra was intended as an instruction manual for a young bachelor, and much of the first part of it is dedicated to everything he needs to do to make himself a worthwhile catch," says Julianne Balmain, coauthor of The Kama Sutra Deck: 50 Ways to Love You Lover. "Unfortunately, it's the part that most people skip over on their way to the positions." The advice is surprisingly comprehensive; there is, for instance, a chapter entitled "On the Arrangements of a House, and Household Furniture; and about the Daily Life of a Citizen, His Companions, and Amusements." And, despite the fact that the Kama Sutra was penned sometime between the third and fifth centureis C.E., it's extremely relevant.
For instance, Balmain points out that the Kama Sutra takes into account the fact that "sex is intimate, and impeccable grooming is a courtesy that can't be overlooked." The book is specific, down to man-dating that you use cologne to smell nice, but don't wear too much -- sound familiar? "You need to be clean, well-shaven, otherwise well-groomed, and well-dressed. You did then, and you do now," says Balmain. And a ring on your finger doesn't get you off the hook. Don't you dare complain that she's let herself go unless you're willing to go the extra mile yourself.
We think it's time that American men learned what women have always known: that someone who looks like they'd be good to touch gets touched more often. Perhaps that's why male grooming salons like John Allan's are popping up all over the United States.
In Europe, it's been a trend forever. The first men's-only spa and grooming salon in the United States, Nickel, is actually a French transplant. In many cultures, including Russia, Hungary, Japan, and the Netherlands, it's derigueur to go and get really, really clean at a public bathhouse. Many-- from the Japanese onsen to the Russian banyas to the Finnish saunas to the Hungarian thermal baths to Korean mogyoktangs and jjimjilbang -- offer either grooming services or a place to do it yourself.
But when we think of bespoke tailoring, valets, and the kind of shave that results in a stiff upper lip, we think of the British, so that's where we went for advice -- specifically, to Ray Khandpur at London's number one male grooming salon, Jason Shankey Male Grooming, who says, "Girls are getting sick of men looking a mess, but men are afraid of a place that will go too far." Grooming salons, specifically targeted to men often have a clubby, masculine feeling to them and specialize in making men look better without making them look perfect.
